Ashia Hansen breaks triple jump Games record

Hansen produced the longest jump of the year to win her second Commonwealth Games gold medal adding Manchester to her Kuala Lumpur title four years ago.

Cameroon’s Francoise Mbango got the silver medal with a jump of 14.82m, a jump she produced in her very last attempt.

A very pleased Hansen said: “I wanted it even more because she was waving to the crowd thinking she had won it.”

“I heard the crowd on the runway, but then I went into auto pilot. Everything just fell into place,” she added.

After the final, Mbango, said: “I’m happy to get the silver medal and with a season’s best. But I felt I was going to win it”

Trecia Smith jumped 14.32m, enough for a bronze medal.
