The men's 1500m final saw unexpected success for England's Mike East tonight. The athlete sprinted his way to a Commonwealth gold medal with a personal best in a time of 3:37.35.

Kenyan William Chirchir won silver after being pipped by East in the last yards in time of 3.37.70.

England's Anthony Whiteman, Canadians Graham Hood and Kevin Sullivan, and Uganda's Julius Achon all achieved season's best times.

Francis Munthali of Malawi claimed tenth place and the national record time of 3:43.50.

East celebrated his title saying: ďThe last couple of races Iíve done have been pretty mediocre, and to come out here itís obviously a pleasure to not only get a medal but to win the thing."

"I was expecting the two big guns in the field to dictate the thing which they did, but I managed to sneak it in the end.Ē
