The track
The track is an oval shape measuring 400m in its inside lane. A kerb five centimetres high borders the inside of the track, and each lane is between 1.22 to 1.25 metres wide. Races are run counterclockwise, and the lanes are numbered 1 to 8 from the inside out.

Relay Baton
A circular smooth, hollow tube - usually made from alumninium 30 cms long and weighing less than 50g, is passed from athlete to athlete by hand.

Footwear
Competitors may compete barefoot or with footwear on one or both feet. These shoes, if worn, give protection and stability to the feet. The sole and heel of the shoes may have up to 11 spikes attached.

Eyewear
Many runners now wear sunglasses to reduce uncomfortable glare during a race.
