Badminton preview - 26 July

26 July 2002

Top seeds England open their Group A challenge in the badminton team competition against Nigeria on Friday morning.

Wong Choon Hann

Malaysia's Wong Choong Hann - in line for a single's berth?

The first 16 group matches of the day are scheduled over four sessions starting at 09:00, 12:00, 15:30 and 19:00. Play will take place on four courts.

England and Nigeria feature in the second session, at the same time of the Group B match between the two Channel Island teams, Jersey and Guernsey.

Jersey’s top women’s singles player Elizabeth Cann, daughter of team manager Carmen Cann, recently won her first England international cap and is currently ranked third on the English National rankings.

Canada are the floating team in the competition, unlucky not to be seeded, but will find it hard against Malaysia when the two meet at 19:00.

As an example of Malaysia’s depth their coach Park Joo-bong can choose a men’s singles player from Wong Choong Hann, LEE Tsuen Seng and Hashim Muhammad Hafiz who all ranked within the world’s top 13.

England’s second contest of the day sees them play Trinidad and Tobago at 19:00.
