27 July 2002

There will be hardly a louder cheer at the Forum Centre, Wythenshawe, during the Commonwealth Games than when Andy Morris (ENG) climbs into the ring on Saturday.

The Forum Centre hosts its second day of action

The 19-year-old Morris, who was born and bred in Wythenshawe, has his first Games bout at lightweight (60 kg) against Courtney Harvey (JAM).

Morris’s England team-mate Daniel Happe begins his campaign at welterweight (67 kg) against law student Ryan Savage (CAN) in the last bout of the day.

Wales bantamweight (54 kg) Darren Edwards faces Ludumo Galada (RSA) in his second round bout while Andrew Singh Kooner (CAN) meets Franklyn Mayei (SLE) at the same stage.

The Australian boxing team will be looking to bantamweight Justin Kane to brighten up their Games after three defeats on Friday.

Kanewas a bronze medallist at the 1998 Games and must beat Ghana’s Jonathan Yartey to reach the next round.

Bantamweight Martin Lindsay (NIR) has a similar task to Kane after his team suffered four defeats on the opening day.

Student Lindsay, 20, who prepared for the Games with the rest of his team on a training trip to Cuba, is up against Manju Dine Wanniarachchi (SRI).
