28 July 2002

Local hero Andy Morris stepped up the pace in the later rounds to beat India's Ramanand Ramanand 29-16 on points.

19-year-old Morris was trailing on points after the first two rounds before he assumed control and won the bout in style - forcing Ramanand to take a mandatory count of eight in the last round after landing three clubbing hooks.

Morris stuck to his game plan even though he went behind on points early on: “I was told I was behind after the second round but the plan was to push him back and keep picking up the points by countering.”

Morris has his sights firmly set on getting gold so much so he says he’s been dreaming about the final: “I fought for the gold medal about 12 times in my sleep last night.”

He now faces Saheed Adigun Salawu after the Nigerian stopped Belize’s Joseph Eagan eight seconds into the second round, having forced two mandatory counts in the opening session.

Wales’ light-welterweight Vivian Bryan used his height advantage to cruise to a 26-11 points victory over Dave Mazinyane of Malawi. Australia’s light-welterweight hope Jarrod Fletcher beat Botswana’s Dintwa Sloca 17-13 despite it being his first fight in six weeks.

Former England welterweight Tony Cesay, who is now representing his home country Sierra Leone to fulfil his mother’s dream, boxed well in the last round to win comfortably 26-9 on points against Malaysia’s Shuhairi Hussain.

Earlier in the day England suffered their first defeat in boxing at Manchester 2002 when flyweight Matthew Marsh was knocked unconscious by South Africa’s Nzimeri Msutu in the second round of their opening contest.

Nineteen-year-old Marsh from West Ham was taken to hospital in Salford as a precaution but was released later in the afternoon.
