29 July 2002

A fantastic evening's boxing takes place at Manchester 2002.

Australia medal hope Paul Miller opened his Manchester Commonwealth Games campaign at middleweight (75kg) in emphatic fashion on Monday night.

The Australian racked up the points early against Derick Fimbo of Zimbabwe and the contest was stopped in the second round by the 15-point rule margin.

Miller, who boxed at the 2000 Olympics, is bidding to become the first Australian middleweight to win Games gold since Philip McElwaine triumphed at Edmonton, Canada, in 1978.

England featherweight Steve Bell, the last boxer from the host nation in action at the Games, forced a mandatory count of eight in the first round against Devon Jones of Trinidad and Tobago before the referee stopped the contest in the next session.

Light-flyweight (48kg) Mohammad Ali Qamer, fifth at the World Championships last year, bloodied the nose of Kenya's Suleiman Wanjau Bilal with a short left hook in the second round which prompted the referee to stop the contest.

South Africa light-flyweight Phumzile Mathyila accelerated to a 15-point lead against Jack Willie of Papua New Guinea in the first round and with ten seconds remaining of the session the bout was stopped.

Uganda's big-punching Dennis Mwanje defeated featherweight Thandi Ntjona of Lesotho in the second round after forcing two mandatory counts.

Pakisatan's Ali Haider survived heavy punishment in the last round to beat Wales featherweight Peter Allan Ashton 25-14 on points.

The night finished with the middleweight Jermain Jerome Mackey of The Bahamas spectacularly knocking out Samoan Luamlima Tokiana with a booming left hook.
