Last gasp boxing victory for Langley

01 August 2002

England’s Darran Langley snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the dying seconds of his light flyweight semi-final at the MEN arena.

Langley left it late to take victory

Langley was trailing Malaysia’s Zamzai Mohamed by eight-points at the half-way point and he looked a beaten man.

The London-based 20-year-old was still five points behind as the bout entered the final round, but he put in an exceptional last two minutes to turn the score on its head.

In the last ten seconds of the contest Langley equalled the score and then took a one point lead leaving Mohamed shellshocked with the turn of events, the final score being 19-18.

Langley said: “I gave it my all in the fourth and the crowd got behind me and that helped."

“It was like a dream come true to just be picked for the England team, but to be in the Commonwealth final is a great feeling,” he added.

Langley will now face Qamar Ali for the gold medal on Saturday after the Indian proved far too strong for Nigeria's Taoreed Ajagbe. The final score in that contest was 27-13.

England's bantamweight hope Mark Moran couldn't match Langley's performance, he was defeated by Australia's Justin Kane by two points, 26-24. Kane will face Andrew Kooner of Canada in the final after he outclassed Lesotho's Ezekiel Letuka 37-29.

Kane believes that the hardest fight is out of the way: “I think this fight was harder than fighting Kooner will be because of the crowds support for Moran."

But Kooner was not bothered about his next opponent: “I have heard the Australian is very aggressive, that will play into my hands.”
