Meares in the fast track to new Games record


Kerrie Meares (AUS) raced to gold becoming the first competitor to break the 20 second barrier in the first lap of the womens 500m time trial, setting a new Games record of 35.084 seconds.

After her victory in the closely fought competition an elated Meares said: Im really happy. Its the highlight of my career. Meares, who went all out said: I couldnt get my breath at one point but I just had to kick in. Meares previously won gold at the World Junior Titles in Italy.

A jubilant Jules Paulding (ENG) took the silver medal setting a new British record with a time of 35.448. Showing appreciation for her support Paulding said: The home crowd were brilliant and Im really pleased with my time.

Lori-Ann Muenzer (CAN) took the bronze with a time of 35.595. She said: I was looking for a different coloured medal but Im still very, very happy with it. Anyone can win on any given day.
