McGee said on regaining his Games record: “I kept going after I passed him and I knew I had a bit more to give in the last kilometre. You don’t get those opportunities very often so you might as well keep your feet going. But I couldn’t resist a little victory salute anyway.”

On facing Bradley Wiggins in the final McGee said: “He’s going really strong. I know Bradley as we are in the same professional team. He’ll definitely have the crowd on his side, which is a bit of a change around from when I beat Rob Hayles at the Olympics for the bronze medal. What goes around comes around I guess.”

Bradley Wiggins of England who took the silver medal said about McGee “It was always going to be a difficult one against Brad (McGee). We have raced all year together as (professional) team-mates. It was always going to be difficult mentally as much as anything because we are friends but Brad is a class rider and the time he did just proves that. Once I sensed he was catching, my head wandered and that was it then really.

“Getting to the final was the main objective. I’m a little bit disappointed at the moment but I will look back in the morning and be pleased.”
