Kiwi gymnasts heading for Manchester

27 June 2002

A six-member team will represent New Zealand in the gymnastics competition at the Commonwealth Games. New Zealand Gymnastics confirmed a team of four women and two men.

18-year-old Alethea Boon leads the four member women's artistic team. She’s joined by Kate Brocklehurst, Belinda Castles and Nicki Wells.

Boon was a member of the team that finished 8th in Kuala Lumpur. She has been competing in gymnastics for ten years and rates her favourite apparatus as the vault.

Brocklehurst, having just turned 15 in May, will be the youngest member of the New Zealand team in Manchester. She has been competing in the sport since she was four and was rated as the best junior in New Zealand in 2000.

Castles is another 15-year-old in the team and reckons she was participating in the sport almost as soon as she could walk. She was ranked 11th in the junior section at the recent Pacific Alliance Championships.

Wells, 17, finished 16th at the Pacific Alliance Championships this year.

Garrick Rowe is the elder statesman in the men’s line-up At 26 he has a wealth of experience in the sport and will compete on the floor and vault. Rowe has finished in the top three at the New Zealand National Championships in the last two years.

Daniel Good completes the team. The 18-year-old was national champion last year after winning the junior title previously.
