Injury forces top gymnast out of the Games

17 July 2002

Top Northern Ireland gymnast Holly Murdock will not be appearing at the Commonwealth Games after suffering a serious leg injury.

Holly Murdoch

Murdock could be out for as many as 10 months

The 18-year-old sustained a fracture and damaged a cruciate knee ligament at the British Championships and will need to undergo surgery immediately.

Murdock who is the highest ever rated gymnast in the UK has been told she may be out for as many as 10 months. This will be a huge disappointment to Murdock who is due to start a scholarship in America in January.

"I am devastated. I was hoping to win a medal for Northern Ireland," she said.

“Something seems to go wrong when big championships come along."

Murdock also missed out at the 2000 Olympics because of a broken toe.
