Gymnasts overwhelmed by atmosphere

26 July 2002

After finishing first in session one of the all-team event the Scottish men’s gymnastic team were in high spirits.

G-MEX Centre will host the gymnastics, judo and wrestling events

Steve Frew, the team captain, said: “I think it’s one of the best performances that the Scotland team has ever achieved.”

And on his own individual performance he added: “I was very happy with my rings routine and hope to make the final. I made a mistake on the bars but one mistake in the whole competition isn’t bad. I’m looking to qualify for the all-around final and the rings, but it’s going to be tough.”

“The crowd was fantastic – a lot better than Kuala Lumpur.”

Also impressed with the crowd at the G-MEX Centre was fellow Scotsman Adam Young who at just 15-years-old makes his first appearance at a Commonwealth Games.

He said: “The crowd was excellent today – it was an amazing feeling walking out here. That’s what made it for us.”

Courtney Orange, Zimbabwe’s only competitor in the competition, said of the atmosphere: “I was a bit nervous at first but the atmosphere was amazing and I appreciated the support from back home.”

And Daniel Good of New Zealand made it clear what he thought of it in the G-MEX Centre. “The atmosphere was awesome – an excellent stadium and crowd. I’m looking forward to the next events.”
