29†July†2002

New Zealand came from behind to win their final match of the womenís pool phase to top Pool 2 and claim an automatic semi-final berth.

Canada made New Zealand work hard for a semi-final berth

The Black Sticks had gone behind in their two previous pool matches against England and India. The pattern was repeated as Deb Cuthbert pounced to follow up a penalty corner in the 11th minute.

New Zealandís midfield was unable to impose their rhythm on the game in the first 20 minutes, with Canadaís Julia Wong marshalling her team impressively. However, after she was penalised in the 23rd minute, New Zealand enjoyed three consecutive short corners, culminating in Jaimee Provan flicking in Diana Weaverís initial strike.

New Zealand pressed hard after the goal, and the pressure told on Canada as scorer Cuthbert was yellow carded on the stroke of half-time.

The second-half was halted abruptly as Meggan Hunt suffered a facial injury from a direct hit from the ball, and was escorted away for medical attention.

Canada struggled with adjustments to their formation, and allowed Niniwa Roberts-Lang too much room inside the area to follow-up a penalty corner in the 41st minute.

No sooner had Cuthbert returned than Canada found themselves down again to 10 players as Emily Rix was yellow-carded on 45 minutes, much to the vocal disapproval of the crowd, and Canada struggled to make headway.

Moira Senior made sure of the result, and New Zealandís semi-final place, with a well worked 59th minute goal.
