At Auckland in 1990 New Zealand did exceptionally well winning one gold, two silver and two bronze medals.

New Zealand Olympic committee secretary general Barry Maister says

"In 1990 we achieved some fantastic results at the Commonwealth Games. The athletes selected for Manchester all have extensive international experience and I am sure they will perform with great credit."

The menís team is led by Sydney Olympian Tim Slyfield who took a bronze in Edinburgh in 1998. He is joined by Gareth Knight and Andrew Ross who are both currently ranked number one in their respective divisions in New Zealand.

The womenís team is made up of Nellie Stallworthy who has been recording convincing 10 point wins, Melissa Jones who is firmly established as the top female Judo player in New Zealand and Rochelle Stormont who won a silver medal in the Swedish Open.

Head coach Brent Cooper, who won a Commonwealth Games gold medal in 1990 is confident the team will perform well in Manchester.

"Judo has always performed well at Commonwealth level events and I am convinced that the members of this team have the experience, commitment and skill to deliver medal winning performances."
