Bowls champion crashes out

02 August 2002

Difficult weather conditions cause upsets at Heaton Park.

Zimbabwe’s Roy Garden, the defending Commonwealth champion, crashed out of the competition at the group stages despite beating the youngest player Ryan Bester (CAN) 21-14.

Garden never lost his lead from the first end, but the 17-year-old drew level once and pulled back to within one shot in the ninth and 11 ends.

But the Zimbabwean’s earlier loss to Englishman Mervyn King meant he lost out on a place in the last eight to his Friday opponents.

And as darkness fell on Heaton Park, the last two women’s singles matches were as tight as they could be.

Scotland’s Margaret Letham missed out on a last-eight berth despite beating Lorna Trigwell (RSA) 21-16.

The two went shot for shot for much of the match before the Scot won the 20th end by four shots to take the score to 17-14. She then let Trigwell back into the game in the 24th end when Letham required one shot for the win.

She then got the shot she wanted - though how anybody could have seen it is anybody’s guess - to take the match in the 26th end.

At the same time, Ahmad Siti Zalina topped group B despite losing to Jane Rigby of Zimbabwe, who finished runner-up.

Siti Zalina led for 10 of the 20 ends, but Rigby did not relinquish her lead gained in the 13th to take the match 21-17.

Wales’s Robert Weale leapfrogged Mike Kernaghan (NZL) to top spot in Group B when he beat Albert Solomon (FIJ) 21-6. He faces Scotland’s Darren Burnett in the quarter-final match on Saturday.
