Wales are now aiming for a top six finish

Wales, the European Champions in 2001, won the closely fought group A contest 48-47 and it couldn’t have been more dramatic as they were trailing the Sri Lankans 47-46 with less than a minute to go.

But then Jones managed to keep her nerve to win the match for Wales and afterwards made it sound easy: “I didn’t really think about it. I didn’t look at the time so I didn’t know how long I had to get the goal in.”

Sri Lanka’s wing defence Gayathri Lankatilleke was disappointed with the defeat, especially after her team had led for the first 40 minutes, but she remained positive and looked to then next match: “Next we play England. We will be fighting and will perform,” she said.

Meanwhile in group B Fiji’s netballers were beaten by South Africa 52-42 on their Commonwealth Games debut. South Africa’s captain Mable van der Vyver noted how strong the newcomers were: “ I was very confident that we would win this game but when we started off it was very tough.”

Fiji’s coach Yvonne Willering remained in defiant mood announcing:“You haven’t seen the best of Fiji yet.”
