South Africa stave off close challenge

26 July 2002

World netball number five, South Africa staved off a gallant challenge from world number six and big-improver Fiji to win 52-42 on Friday.

Netball

South Africa enjoyed a considerable height advantage, particularly in 195cm shooter Sindisiwe Gumede, who proved a more than a handful for the Fijian defence netting 43 goals from 52 attempts.

Fiji played in bursts and started the first three quarters strongly only to be pegged back midway through each quarter by South Africa.

Unaisi Rokoura provided plenty of centre-court drive for Fiji, who elevated its ranking from 11th to sixth at the 1999 World Championships.

South Africa gained momentum late in the third quarter and carried it through to the start of the fourth when they quickly moved to a 10-goal break.

Fiji is coached by the highly-reputed Australian Margaret Corbett and Yvonne Willering (NZL). Willering coached New Zealand to silver medals at the 1999 World Championships and 1998 Commonwealth Games.
