England and Jamaica take netball spoils
26 July 2002
Jamaica confirmed the fears of the top netball sides in the Commonwealth Games that they will be a major force in the competition.
Jamaica convincingly accounted for Barbados 65-20 and thrilled spectators with their characteristic aerial skills and athletic play.
England were the other emphatic winners. Coach Lyn Gunson had the luxury of fielding most of her squad as her side cruised to an 87-26 victory against Canada.
Alex Astle was England's standout, shooting 30 goals in the half that she played.
Sri Lankan players were visibly disappointed after losing their game against Wales to a goal in the closing moments.
Sri Lanka had led for most of the game but a couple of late turnovers proved costly with Welsh shooter Mair Jones converting the winner with seconds remaining.
Fiji showed promise but struggled to combat 195cm South African goal shooter Sindisiwe Gumede.
The go-to shooter finished with 43 goals from 52 attempts in South Africa’s 52-42 victory.
