Australia keep the goals coming

28July2002

Australia recorded their second consecutive netball victory with a comfortable 83-32 triumph against world no 6 Fiji in pool B.

Fiji opened with a high intensity while Australia took time to settle.

The world and Commonwealth champions, ignited by Rebecca Sanders in the centre court, then lifted, taking the score from 10-7 to 26-8 at quarter-time.

Sharelle McMahon and Eloise Southby worked intuitively in goals for Australia but Fiji trailing 18-44 at half-time - refused to back down.

In business-like fashion, Australia kept the scoreboard ticking over in the third quarter with the defensive work of Janine Iltich and long goal-circle feeds from captain Kathryn Harby-Williams (AUS) a feature.

The anticipation of Fijian goal defender Ana Ratumaisala forced the odd turnover, but Australia proved too strong.

Australian wing attack Alex Hodge completed a half having recovered from an ankle sprain sustained four days ago.

Catherine Cox (AUS) was the top scorer with 29 goals from 36 attempts.
