30 July 2002

Reigning Commonwealth silver medallists New Zealand earned their final win of the preliminary round by beating Wales 81-23.

New Zealand were averaging 94 goals a game before Tuesday but the Welsh restricted them to around 20 goals in each quarter.

Undefeated New Zealand finished on top of Pool A and gain a direct route to the semi-final round on Friday.

Goal keeper Vilimaina Davu, who sustained a minor calf injury on Monday against England, was not risked against Wales on Tuesday.

Star goal shooter Irene Van Dyk, a key to New Zealand’s gold-medal hopes, was also rested against Wales.

Wales, despite trailing 7-17 at quarter-time and 11-37 at half-time, restricted the free-flowing game of New Zealand with disciplined full-court defence.

New Zealand goal attack Donna Loffhagen (35/38) continued her impressive form. She said afterwards: "In our game tonight there were patches that weren’t that great but obviously we’re coming together really well.”
