31 July 2002

Defending Commonwealth champion Australia prevailed in a physical clash against likely medal contender Jamaica 60-33 on Tuesday.

The Australians plot the Jamaicans' defeat

Australia has finished on top of Pool B and Jamaica in second spot at the conclusion of preliminary competition.

Australia’s full-court defence (led by centre Nicole Richardson, wing defender Peta Squire and goal defence Kathryn Harby-Williams) prevented any quick transitions down court by Jamaica who struggled to penetrate into attack.

The game featured countless heavy body clashes and collisions.

Jamaica took 11 minutes to settle, squandering numerous first-quarter possessions as their defence came under intense pressure, and trailed 18-8 at quarter time.

Australia prospered from the down-court drive of attacking defenders Harby-Williams and Squire. Playmaking goal attack Sharelle McMahon was lively and ably supported by Catherine Cox and then Eloise Southby.

Australia led 26-18 at half-time and 44-23 at three-quarter-time.

Jamaican Sharon Wiles read the play well at wing defence while shooter Elaine Davis and goal attack Simone Forbes were solid once in possession.

Jamaica meet Wales on Wednesday while Australia advance to Friday’s semi-finals.
