31 July 2002

Fiji finally delivered with a convincing 74-39 win against Canada.

Fiji were the best improved side at the 1999 World Championships but were defeated in all four Commonwealth Games Pool B preliminary games.

However they proved a cut above Canada in the 7th/10th place play-off, stepping about the court with newfound authority in what was a disciplined and consistent display.

In the first quarter Fiji were consistently strong across the court with the accuracy of goal attack Matelita Shaw (9/13) and shooter Taraima Rara (9/9) maximising their dominance. Fiji led 18-7 at quarter-time.

Canada counter attacked in the second quarter with goal shooter Dulcina Wind converting eight goals from eight attempts, but still trailed 21-34 at half-time.

Fiji regained control in the third quarter and outscored Canada 16-9.

The result means Fiji plays Sri Lanka on Friday for a chance to finish seventh while Canada meet Barbados with the winner to finish ninth.
