England make it to netball semi-finals

31 August 2002

England play world no 1 Australia in Friday night’s semi-final after defeating South Africa 55-40 in Wednesday night’s qualifier.

A packed MEN Arena roared England to victory

South Africa vie for fifth place on Friday with either Wales or Jamaica.

World no 3 England resolved their goal-scoring concerns when goal attack Abby Teare found her rhythm to top-score with 29/39.

The defensive domination of goal keeper Sonia Mkoloma and goal defender Amanda Newton, particularly in the third quarter, allowed England to set up the win.

Mkoloma and Newton double teamed South Africa’s go-to shooter Sindisiwe Gumede, evaporating their chief goal-scoring avenue.

The defensive anticipation of Mkoloma had sparked English team-mates earlier in the game and helped England lead at every change.

England's centre Karen Aspinall said afterwards: “We regrouped from Monday night’s game [loss to New Zealand] as we were disappointed with that performance.”

“We knew this was a crucial match. Our tournament could have finished here and our aim is to get a medal.”
