04 August 2002
The might of the rugby greats New Zealand and Fiji meet head to head in the final of the rugby sevens cup competition.
New Zealand beat Samoa 31 – 12 in a tough semi-final round.
Eric Rush the New Zealand captain reflected on his team’s performance: “We played quite well there, because Samoa are very tough opposition. So we’re quite happy with that.”
Commenting on being favourites for the gold medal Rush said: “We don’t really like those sort of tags, but we’ll approach the final the same way as this game. We’ll just try and stay focussed because whoever we play, it will be tough.”
Fiji beat South Africa 17 – 7 in a tough and closely fought match.
