Wales confident as rugby captain is named

16July2002

Newport flanker Jason Forster has been named as captain for Wales' rugby sevens squad for the fast approaching Commonwealth Games.

Rob Howley

Rob Howley will be following Forster's orders

He will lead a 12-man squad that includes internationals Rob Howley, Gareth Thomas, Dafydd James, Arwel Thomas, Matthew Robinson and Gareth Wyatt.

Forster was delighted to be made captain and spoke for all the squad when he said: "We are determined to play well, enjoy ourselves and make all of Wales proud of us."

Team manager David Rees believes that his squad have the right balance to do exactly that: "We have picked a strong and talented squad with a good blend of sevens specialists and the experience and all-round athleticism of those who have been tied to the 15-a-side game.

Rees is also confident that his team could cause a few upsets at the Games, he added: "Provided we play to our potential, we can certainly challenge to be among the medals."

Coach Colin Hillman, who favours Fiji to be the winners, also feels Wales will be in contention for the medals, he said: "With the progress we've shown this season, then I think the semi-finals are not beyond us.

Wales face Sri Lanka, Tonga and one of the competition favourites South Africa in their opening group games.
