Aussie rugby team want medals to match their jerseys

16†July†2002

Australian rugby sevens coach, Julian Gardner, has said his team will be aiming for a Commonwealth Games medal to match the colour of their jerseys.

City of Manchester Stadium will host the rugby sevens

After finishing fifth in the World Series the Australians will most certainly be looking to improve on their recent form. Gardner, however, remains positive.

"We believe we have put together a team which will be able to challenge for the gold medal," he said.

"It was difficult during the world series. The introduction of interstate B teams took away 50 or 60 potential players. We used 41-42 players this year, you donít have time to develop consistent teams."

"But the Games team is a lot more experienced."

Although the Australian team has been boosted by several Super 12 players, improving on the bronze they achieved in Kuala Lumpur may still be a lot to ask.

Defending gold medallist New Zealand is the favourite for gold with teams such as England, South Africa and Fiji in contention for medals.

Fiji, Trinidad and Tobago and Malaysia complete Australiaís pool.

The rugby sevens tournament will take place in the impressive City of Manchester Stadium at Sportcity.
