India shoot for another gold
29 July 2002
India's Jaspal Rana and Samaresh Jung top the table in the men's 25m standard pistol - pairs event.
Rana and Jung celbrate their win at Bisley
Gold medallists Jaspal Rana and his teammate Samaresh Jung won with an overall score of 1130.
Rana said: “It feels pretty good for Samaresh and I. It’s nice to go one up on our silver the other day.”
On what was going through his mind at the time he added: “There is a technique I use to try and control my mind. Sometimes it drifts like a free bird, thinking of all sorts of things, and needs to be reined back under control.”
Australian Bruce Quick, who along with compatriot Phillip Adams took silver, said: “It would be an insult to the Australian nation to turn up my nose at a silver medal. I had no idea how Phil was doing – I make a point of trying not to find out until the last point.”
On conditions: “The range was enclosed because of the new legislation and was very hot. Hopefully the normal Pommie weather will soon resume.”
Adams said: “I am absolutely happy to win silver. It is always nice to do well on your birthday. Halfway through I thought we’d be doing well just to get a place – that’s how badly it seemed to be going. It’s a relief to get back to shooting after this last week.”
“The last time I shot this discipline was eight years ago so I didn’t know the status of the other shooters and that adds its own pressure.”
Fredrick van Tonder and Daniel Van Tonder of South Africa claimed third place.
