No surprises in squash mixed doubles
Top seeds Fiona Geaves and Chris Walker brushed aside the Guyanans Luke Fraser and Nicolette Fernandes 15-8, 15-8 in Pool A, but were hard pressed to beat the Malaysian duo Kelvin Ho and Sharon Wee in their second match.
The English pair raced into a 5-1 lead, but were pegged back to 6-6 and then 10-10. Geaves argued with the referee on two occasions over let calls, but the Gloucester player and the former England captain held on to take the opener 15-12, before wrapping up the match 15-11.
In the same Pool, eighth-seeded New Zealanders Leilani Rorani and Glen Wilson dismissed the Welsh challenge of Karen Hogan and Scott Fitzgerald 15-11, 15-6 in 23 minutes.
Several hours later they continued their winning streak with a 15-7, 15-10 success over the Malaysians Kelvin Ho and Sharon Wee.
Pool B favourites and second seeds Ong Beng Hee and Nicol David (MAL) cruised past the unseeded Jamaicans Marlene West and James Bullock 15-3, 15-7. Group opponents Joe Kneipe/Robyn Cooper (AUS) beat Northern Irelandís Steve Richardson/Madeline Perry 15-8, 15-10.
Matches in Pool C kicked off with a court three clash between sixth seeds Martin Heath/Pamela Nimmo (SCO) and Gavin Jones/Karen Hargreaves (WAL). Forty minutes of frenetic action delivered the first upset of the competition, with the unseeded Welsh duo winning 15-12, 17-15.
In pool D, singles silver medallist Carol Owens (NZL) and partner Daniel Sharplin crushed the Jamaicans Karen Anderson and Wayne Prescod 15-0, 15-4. They then took a little over half an hour to beat Scotlandís Neil Frankland and Wendy Maitland 15-10, 15-6.
The final mixed doubles Pool matches are scheduled to be completed on Friday.
