Table tennis tournaments conclude tomorrow

Second seeds Duan Yong Jun and Li Jia Wei of Singapore beat England's Matt Syed and Katy Parker 3-2 in their quarter-final.

Duan and Li will face New Zealanders Peter Jackson and Li Chunli, seeded equal third, after they sealed a quarter-final victory over Ryan Jenkins and Bethan Daunton of Wales.

Jackson commented: "We're really happy. That's what we came here to achieve, now we need to improve on that."

Zhang Tai Yong and Jing Jun Hong of Singapore, another equal third seed, over-ran Canadian pair Pradeebanl Peter-Paul and Marie-Christine Roussy in straight sets.

They will meet the unseeded Brett Clarke and Lay Jian Fang of Australia, who beat New Zealand's Shane Laugesen and Karen Li 3-2.

In the women's wheelchair singles, Sue Gilroy of England stormed through to the semi-finals after a 3-0 win over South Africa's Rosabelle Riese.

Gilroy will meet fellow English team-member Cathy Mitton in the semis, having secured her place after a hard-fought win against Claire Harris of Wales 3-2. Gilroy commented: "It's very difficult to play a team partner. It's whoever wins on the day, so we'll have to wait and see. There are normally four groups. So normally Cathy and I should never meet."

On the women's wheelchair events being included in the Commonwealth medal tally she commented: "It's really pleasing. It's about time we were included the same as everyone else. We go around the world as a team and it's nice to be recognised for once."

Other winners were Australia's Joy Boyd and South Africa's Alette Moll.
