24 July 2002

The Welsh are quietly confident of doing well, according to table tennis team captain Bethan Daunton.

The team have been training hard under Chinese coach Li Chao in preparation for the start of the tournament on Friday, 26 July when Wales will be in Group C.

Group C is the smallest of the three groups, with No three seeds New Zealand, India (five) and Nigeria (nine).

“It [the draw] could have been better, but it is all right really,” said 22-year-old Daunton.

She is one of two survivors in the team from the squad that reached the second stage at the last Commonwealth Championships when they lost to Australia, seeded sixth in the Games – the first to stage table tennis.

The other “old hand” is Siwan Davies, 2l, while newcomers to the squad are Natasha Lake, 26, and l4-year-old schoolgirl Naomi Owen.
