The top seeds should have an easy round of matches in the first day of the men and women’s table tennis team events on Friday.

Matthew Syed will be hoping to retain his Commonwealth title

Commonwealth champion Matthew Syed will start his Manchester 2002 gold medal bid when top seeds England play Trinidad & Tobago and Northern Ireland in Group A.

Among the players to watch in Group C are Canadian national champion Johnny Huang, who will line up against Cameroon and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Nigeria’s Segun Toriola will lead his Commonwealth Championships gold medal winning team when they play unseeded teams Kiribati and Cameroon in the tough Group C draw.

In the women’s teams, Singaporean heavyweights Li Jia Wei and Jing Jun Hong look certain to overpower Lesotho and Nigeria in Group A.

Veteran player LI Chunli will lead a strong New Zealand team in Group C against Northern Ireland and Wales.

Former world number one Geng Lijuan of Canada should help her team to cruise through the day against Barbados, but they could face a challenge against a young Malaysian side in Group B.

Play gets under way with session one at 10:00 followed by session two at 16:00.
