A convincing performance by former world No 1 Lijuan Geng over England’s Helen Lower ensured her team finished top of Group B.

Chris Xu then beat Nicola Deaton and despite some long rallies and aggressive play from the reigning English women’s singles champion, Deaton was eventually defeated 3-1.

Katy Parker looked tired following her session one battle against the Malaysians, but put up a brave fight, with some tactical and skilful play. However she eventually lost 3-2 to the stronger Petra Cada.

Singapore continued their winning form when they beat quarter-final hopefuls Australia 3-0.

21-year-old Australian, Miao Miao was unfortunate to lose the opening match against Singapore’s veteran Jing Jun Hong, while Commonwealth champion Li Jia Wei, also from Singapore, had no trouble in beating Australia’s Lay Jian Fang.

Victory enhanced Singapore’s chances of taking the gold medal as they head into the quarter-finals on Sunday.
