Singapore have won their first ever Commonwealth Games table tennis gold medal.

Singapore beat surprise finalists Australia 3-0 in the final of the womenís team competition.

World number nine Jia Wei Li of Singapore began the assault by outclassing Australian Jian Fang Lay 3-0 in just over 13 minutes, taking advantage of the Australianís frequent errors.

Australia then had to rely on their number one, Miao Miao, to win the second rubber, but she became frustrated when a number of shots didnít go her way. Jun Hong Jing capitalised, placing shots on the edge of the table and just over the net to win 3-1.

Xue Ling Zhang of Singapore came out firing in the third, determined to seal the gold medal. Hitting close into the body of Tammy Gough, she was able to control the play and win important rallies. Not even a smash at match point could save Gough who lost 3-1.

The final result for the womenís team event was gold to Singapore, silver to Australia and bronze to Canada and New Zealand.
