Weightlifting preview - 31 July

30 July 2002

Women take the stage for the second day of the Weightlifting with competition in the 53kg and 58kg events.

Weightlifting

The men are competing at 69 kg where Hamidon Hidayat (MAS) will be hoping to follow up his success in Kuala Lumpur four years ago.

At the 1998 Games, Hidayat took gold in the clean & jerk and silver overall to add to the portfolio of success he began to build back in 1995 at the South-East Asia Games.

Hidayat will be challenged by a broadly drawn field, including the two Welshmen Ray Williams and Arfon Roberts while the form of the Indian lifters suggests that Chitradurga Kumar and Govinda Vadivelu will want to make their mark.

In the women’s 58kg event, Maryse Turcotte (CAN) will have been impressed by the silver medal performance of her younger sister Karine in the 48kg final which introduced women’s weightlifting to the Commonwealth Games for the first time.
