Wales snatch an unexpected Commonwealth title.
Wales gained a surprise gold medal in weightlifting with Michaela Breeze capturing the snatch medal in the 58kg category because her body weight was 120 grams lighter than Canada’s Maryse Turcotte.
The contest between the two lifters came to a tense finish with 23-year-old Breeze, after two failed attempts to lift 87.5kg, achieving the target with her third lift.
Turcotte had reached 87.5kg on her second attempt but could not clinch the snatch when she attempted 90kg.
With the two competitors level, the difference in body weight was the decisive factor and Breeze, competing at 56.83kg, had the advantage over Turcotte at 56.95kg. India's Sunaina Sunaina took the bronze medal in snatch with 85 kg.
Breeze continued to prosper but the competition was dominated by Turcotte with gold medals in both the clean and jerk and overall categories. Breeze took silver in the clean and jerk and Sunaina the bronze.
Breeze went confidently into the clean & jerk and peaked at 112.5kg on her third lift which kept her clear of Sunanina whose best was 107.5kg. Meanwhile, Turcotte opened with 110kg and improved to 115kg with her second lift.
The overall category saw Turcotte taking her second gold with a total of 202.5kg followed by Breeze on 200 and Sunaina on 192.5.
