01 August 2002

Damian Brown of Australia denied Welsh veteran Dave Morgan the gold medal in the men’s 77kg snatch with a final lift of 147,5kg.

Damian Brown celebrates his gold medal with a roar

Brown had to equal the Games record in his final lift, which he did successfully.

Morgan’s final lift was 145kg and not enough to win the gold but 2.5kg more than bronze medallist and defending champion Satheesha Rai of India (142.5kg).

Later Rai took the two other gold medals in the 77kg competition shadowed all the way through by Morgan who claimed three silver medals, all in all, in his sixth appearance in the Games.

Brown’s strong position at the end of the snatch was not repeated in the clean & jerk where he registered a no-lift on all three attempts, including a final lift at 177.5kg which would gave given him the gold.

Instead, Rai was able to take the gold with a lift of 175kg which kept him well clear of Morgan whose best was 160kg.

The challenge of Renos Doweiya (NRU) in the clean & jerk could not be overlooked because he also achieved a lift of 160 at his second attempt to finish level with Morgan. A body weight difference of eight grams clinched the medal for Morgan.

In the snatch section, Brown equalled the Games record of 147.5 to win the gold with Morgan in the silver medal place with 145kg and Rai taking bronze with 142.5kg.
