Canada and India hold wrestling aces

02†August†2002

Tagged as the two strongest wrestling nations, both nations lived up to that billing on day one of competition.

Tuyy Amerjit Singh and Eric Ronald Kirschner

Two wrestlers from each country will definitely contest gold on Saturday after dominating their elimination pools.

Indiaís Palwinder Singh CHeema will challenge Eric Kerschner of Canada in the 120kg final, while in the 55kg category Krishnan Kumar of India goes head-to-head with Canadian Mikheil Japaidze in the battle for gold.

Wrestlers from Canada and India also remain in with a chance of gold in the 66kg and 84kg divisions.

At 66kg, the 2001 World Junior Wrestling Champion Ramesh Kumar of India is through to the semi-final along with Nigeria's Fred Jessey and New Zealandís Ricardo Aryan.

Canadaís Graham Ewers enters the repechage to decide the fourth semi-finalist, in a three-man pool with Cameroons' Eric Ciake and Len Zaslevsky of Australia.

In the 84kg division, the semi-finals will be contested between Nicholas Ugoalah of Canada, Nigeriaís Sinivie Boltic, Anuj Kumar of India and England's Jatinder Singh.

Bronze medal fights already confirmed for Saturday are Jacob Isaac of Nigeria against Shaun Williams of South Africa at 55kg, and Mushtaq Rasem Abdullah of Australia against Douglas Thomson of Scotland at 120kg.

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the day came in the 66kg division, when Englandís gold medal hope John Melling found himself out of the competition after just two matches. He was beaten by Ewers and Jessey in pool 1.
