03 August 2002
Nicolas Ugoalah took gold for Canada this evening, beating pre-tournament favourite, Anuj Kumar from India.
Nicolas Ugoalah took the gold for in the 84kg catagory. Ugoalah had dominated his division, looking the strongest competitor throughout the two days.
Kumar had come through a tough group including Scotland’s Joseph Bianco, Jules Camdon of Cameroon, and Daniel Kelly from Australia.
Ugoalah said of his gold medal: “India have a great team and I saw them take the two earlier matches, but I have worked so hard for this. My coaches have been pushing me and that hard work has paid off.”
“We needed this result to lift the Canadian team. Hopefully this has now given us some momentum. My confidence is high right now. I went for it and it paid off.”
Kumar looked tired and lacked some of the form he had shown earlier in his 84kg category matches.
Kumar said: “I would have liked to have won the gold, but I am happy with the silver. It is a great honour for me and for India.”
The bronze medallist Sinivie Boltic of Nigeria said: “I prayed to my God for this victory. I prayed that He would deliver a medal for Nigeria. I am happy to have beaten the home town boy.”
