England team manager Shaun Morley hopes his wrestlers will raise the sport’s profile of the host nation at the Manchester Commonwealth Games.

Morley, a competitor at the 1992 Victoria Games, is supervising training of the seven-man England team along with Russian coach Mykola Kornyeyev at Manchester Grammar School.

Morley hopes a good show by his team at The G-MEX Centre from Friday, 2 August to Sunday 4 August will create more of an interest in the sport in England.

He said: “Wrestling has been a minority sport for many years in England, but we hope to get some television exposure from these Games.

“I’m hoping we can win some medals and stimulate some television coverage, so more people can see what wrestling is about and more children will then want to try it.

“Our realistic target is three medals,” he added. “Two or three of the team compete in Canada or America during the year, so it’s been difficult trying to get them together to build up a team spirit.

“But we had three weeks’ training at the national centre in Salford before moving to Manchester Grammar School, so the spirit has been developing and everybody is in great shape.”
