The Australian always looked in command as she finished ahead of Mandy Loots in the silver medal spot by over a second.

The bronze was taken by Canada’s Jennifer Button with England’s Georgie Lee finishing a disappointing fourth.

Thomas said later: "I didn't want to get caught up with the historical thing. I just went out to swim my best. It'll probably take some time to sink in but it's a wonderful feeling."
