England call for Help

23 July 2002

The Mersey Sound will come to Manchester when the England Synchronised Swimming duet take to the water on 27 July.

Synchronised swimming will be held at the Manchester Aquatics Centre

Gayle Adamson and Katie Hooper will perform to the strains of The Beatles’ sixties hit Help as they challenge the Canadians and Australians in the race for the gold medal.

“We wanted something English and lively,” said coach Adele Carlsen, a member of England’s bronze medal squad at the Kuala Lumpur Commonwealth Games four years ago. “And what better than the Beatles?”

Carlsen is confident the English pair will mount a serious challenge. “The Canadians are ranked three or four in the world, so they will start as favourites. But the Australians just pipped us in KL and we are looking to beat them this time.”

And the England coach is convinced the competition will give spectators at the Manchester Aquatics Centre an opportunity to see for themselves what the sport is all about.

“People take the mickey out of synchronised swimming because they think it looks easy,” said Carlsen. “It’s very frustrating. But once they come and see for themselves what’s involved, they soon change their mind.

“The swimmers train in the water for six hours a day and do a couple of hours’ land training as well. You won’t find many athletes with a workload like that.”

“But we’ve been an Olympic sport since 1984 and this will be the fifth time we’ve been included in the Commonwealth Games, so I think people are gradually starting to take the sport more seriously,” she said.
