Ex-champ Morgan enrols in Ally’s army

27 July 2002

Tony Ally swept to a double silver in the diving pool on a wave of emotion from a partisan home crowd.

But it wasn’t only Ally’s army - his wife Wendy and ten-year-old son Jacob - who were backing the Englishman all the way to the medal podium alongside double champion Alexandre Despatie.

For the Sheffield-based showman also had the support from the packed stands of his old sparring partner and former Commonwealth 10 metre highboard champion Bob Morgan of Wales.

After seeing Ally’s stunning sequence that earned him a second silver in two days, Morgan enthused: “I’m here to support Tony. I’ve known him since he was a young up-and-coming diver at the age of ten.”

And Morgan, who finished fifth in the highboard competition at the Barcelona Olympics in 1992 and seventh in the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur four years ago, knows exactly what it takes to be a top diver.

“I know how it feels to be out there in competition,” he added. “It takes consistency to go out and do six dives well. You have to know how to control it and Ally knows how to do that.”

Morgan, who was based in Sheffield with Ally for much of his career, retired soon after the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta and returned to Wales to be with his family. He now works in real estate.

“I would have carried on diving if Wales had a diving facility, but it doesn’t. During my career, I had to train at Crystal Palace and Sheffield.

“Welsh diving is going in ever decreasing circles, there’s no opportunity for young divers unless they move away. I’m happy at home being a dad.”
