Despatie is in line for a record-breaking thirs gold

The Canadian scored an impressive 205.47 points from his four dives to lead the field ahead of Mathew Helm (AUS) on 199.92 and Leon Taylor (ENG) 196.98.

Taylor was the surprise leader in the early rounds, scoring divingís first maximum 10 of the Games on his opening dive.

But he was overhauled in the third round by Despatie, who concluded his programme with two maximum scores in his final dive.

Taylor was edged into third place by Helm with the very last dive of the competition but fourth-placed Robert New (AUS), who is on 188.58 points, and Pete Waterfield (ENG) on 187.59 are by no means out of contention.

Irina Lashko (AUS) will go into the final of the womenís 3m springboard with an overwhelming advantage in her quest for a springboard double.

The Russian-born 1m champion scored marks above nine in each of the five rounds to total 258.72 points.

Jane Smith (ENG) and Blythe Hartley (CAN) fought a close contest for second position, exchanging places regularly before Smithís final dive took her into second place on 240.09.

But Hartley is not far behind on 238.14 with fourth-placed Emilie Heymans still in contention for a medal on 227.910.
