50m backstroke semi-finalists decided

29 July 2002

Australia's Matt Welsh is the fastest qualifier for tonight's semis.

Ethan Rolff

Ethan Rolff qualified by winning heat 3

Matt Welsh of Australia (26.04), the fastest qualifier for tonight’s semi-finals, said: “I felt strong and didn’t push it at all. If I can hold my stroke and lift my rating and shave down, I can go a lot faster.”

Australian Ethan Rolff won heat three in 26.52 seconds, which made him the fifth fastest qualifier. He said: “It felt good. I didn’t go too hard at all. I felt very nervous before the start. It was such an honour to swim for my country – looking at the cap with my name on it was a thrill.”

“I must admit there was a bit of nerves before the race, because that was my first Commonwealth Games swim.”
