30 July 2002

Justin Norris of Australia began his pursuit of five medals by setting the fastest time for the 200m butterfly final.

A delighted Norris said: “Very happy with that. It’s always good to get a heats swim out of the way, and I won’t hold back anything tonight.”

But home favourite James Hickman (1:59.16) was not far away with his team-mate and heat winner Steve Parry (1:59.74) also featuring strongly.

Defending champion Hickman said: “It was a bit of a race at the end. But I didn’t want to get into that in the heats this morning.”

“Standing up in front of half a billion people as well as the crowd, it was fantastic. It lifted me up – it’s looking good for tonight,” he added.
