Three down, four to go for Thorpedo

31†July†2002

Australiaís teenage swimming sensation Ian Thorpe won his third gold medal at Manchester 2002 and set another Games record.

Third gold for the unstoppable Thorpe

Thorpedo retained his Commonwealth title and was less than a second away from beating his own world record in the menís 200m freestyle final with a time of 1:44.71.

Team mate Grant Hackett followed him closely throughout but Thorpe raced away on the final length to take gold. Hackett took silver with 1:46.13 and Rick Say (1.49.40) of Canada was third.

Unbelievable Thorpe still seemed a bit disappointed after the race which thrilled the full house at the Aquatics Centre, but he added: "It's still a great time and I'm happy at going under 1:45, but I would have been a bit happier if I had gone under 1:45 this evening."

Thorpe has already got gold medals for 400m freestyle and the 4x100m freestyle and he is going for four more.
