Australia's Geoff Huegill won the men's 50m butterfly final at the Manchester Aquatics Centre this evening.

His time of 23.57 seconds was another new Manchester 2002 Commonwealth record. Happy with victory, he commented: "It's one of those races that's over so quickly that you have to compose yourself and make sure you get a good start."

"With guys like Mark Foster and Roland Shoeman it is essential to do that, but I didn't feel in control of the race until the last 10 metres."

South Africa's Roland Shoeman came a close second in 23.66 seconds. He said afterwards: "Swimming for me now is about having fun. That's the key to it all."

"I used to be hard on myself if I didn't get a medal. That's all changed. If I finish eigth and have enjoyed it, that's good enough. A medal is a bonus."

Bronze was claimed by crowd favourite Mark Foster (23.66). He said: "I've swum 23.6 twice last year in Japan, and I expected to go as quick, if not quicker this time. If you've not got the rhythm right, you start trying to power it."

"I got very tired towards the end. I could feel myself dropping. It was always going to be a difficult race."

"The last 10 metres, my power went, and it was hurting. I knew then I was fighting for the minor places. I'm pleased to get a medal, but I came here to win both this and the 50 freestyle."
