Australia’s 4x200m team keeps the record going

01 July 2002

Australia’s 4x200m men’s relay team defended the title they have held since 1954 successfully.

Grant Hackett, Leon Dunne, Jason Cram and Ian Thorpe did exactly what was expected when they won the final in Games record time (7:11.69), more than five seconds ahead of Canada (7:17.17).

England (7:22.56) exchanged their Kuala Lumpur silver medals for Manchester bronze but that didn’t seem to bother Stephen Parry of England’s team.

He said: “I was in tears before we even went out there, and I just hope that with this fantastic crowd, we manage to keep things going. There’s nothing wrong with the bronze.”

“We had a bit of a mixture of a team tonight, but what a night for England,” he added.
