Matt's backstroke of genius

02 August 2002

Matt Welsh who was disqualified from the 200m backstroke has eased his way through to the semis of the 100m backstroke.

Matt Welsh

Welsh will be looking to win his second gold of the Games

Welsh will be determined to win gold and put behind him the disqualification on 1 August.

He qualified in the fastest time with compatriot Thorpe claiming the second fastest time in the heats.

Thorpe, who entered the 100m backstroke ‘for fun’, will have to improve on his time if he wants to beat favourite Welsh and get the fifth of the seven medals he is going for.

England’s Adam Ruckwood was just behind Thorpe in heat 3 and joins fellow Englishmen Simon Burnett and Martin Harris in the semis.
